Not only do we have the desires of the flesh but we have the errors of the previous generations embedded in our philosophy. So once thinking comes off the rails it is hard to get back on track unless you have another source of information you trust more. Other than that, I would qualify the term "Reason".<br /><br />The use of Reason in the classical sense is not untrustworthy like the Enlightentment "Rationalist" type, and especially not what passes for "Reason" today. The reason why most people don't think clearly today is because of bad philosophy, particularly at the university level. Today, the very notions of common sense and classical logic are virtually denied and the classic thinkers are abandoned - all in favor of modern junk philosophies. <br /><br />For example, as you're well aware, many of the Natural Law arguments for Pro-Life causes are easily demonstrable by the proper use of Reason.
